The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has officially approved a major infrastructure project to construct twin tunnels through the Margalla Hills, providing a direct connection between Khanpur and Haripur in Hazara and Islamabad. Once completed, the tunnels will reduce the travel distance between Haripur and Islamabad to just 8 kilometres, cutting travel time to approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Built to international standards and fully illuminated, the twin tunnels are expected to be completed within three years. Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2025 and finish by December 25, 2028.
The project has been formally included in K-P’s Annual Development Program (ADP) 2025.
The tunnels will connect the M-15 Motorway directly to Islamabad’s D-12 sector, offering seamless access to the Hazara Motorway.
The initiative is being developed under a public-private partnership model, with an initial allocation of Rs1 billion for the first year. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has also agreed to extend support for the project.
A feasibility study has already been completed, laying the groundwork for execution.
