The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, in collaboration with the federal government, has approved the launch of the Peshawar Valley Railway, a new train service aimed at connecting key districts in the region.
The project will operate rail cars and diesel multiple units over existing railway infrastructure, with the first phase covering the 62-kilometer Peshawar–Nowshera–Jehangira section. Subsequent phases will extend the service to the Nowshera–Mardan–Dargai (65 km), Mardan–Charsadda (27 km), Peshawar–Jamrud (18 km), and Kohat–Jand (60 km) sections, creating a comprehensive suburban rail network across the valley.
The KP Chief Secretary wrote a letter to the Secretary and Chairman of Pakistan Railways stating that the proposed train project will be named the “Peshawar Valley Railway.”
According to the letter, the KP government is working on operating rail cars and diesel multiple units on existing railway infrastructure.
Groundwork has begun for a preliminary feasibility study, with the first phase covering the Peshawar–Nowshera–Jehangira railway section, spanning 62 kilometers.
The letter also mentioned that a meeting between the KP government and Pakistan Railways was held to discuss enhancing cooperation.
The suburban rail service will be implemented in phases under an open access framework, and track access charges will be mutually agreed upon for the use of Pakistan Railways’ existing infrastructure.
Moreover, the letter requested that Pakistan Railways nominate a technical team to represent it on the project’s working group.
