ISLAMABAD: WhatsApp has become one of the most used messaging and calling platform among people in Pakistan as it offers variety of features. However, a threat of hacking attack always looms over it but you can avoid it by implementing some general tips.
There have been several reports of WhatsApp accounts being hacked across the country, with even prominent personalities falling victim to it.
Over the past few months, numerous users have complained about their WhatsApp accounts being hacked. Around 50 citizens have filed complaints with the FIA’s Cyber Crime Circle in Karachi about hacking attack on their WhatsApp accounts.
The prominent figures, whose accounts have been hacked, include Supreme Court’s ex-senior judge Wajihuddin Ahmed and former head of the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) Ahmed Channa.
Here are some tips to help protect your WhatsApp account from hacking:
Use strong passwords: Ensure your phone’s lock screen password and WhatsApp passwords (if you’ve set one) are strong and unique.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Activate 2FA in WhatsApp Settings > Account > Two-factor authentication. This adds an extra layer of security.
Keep your phone’s operating system and WhatsApp up-to-date: Regular updates often include security patches.
Verify your phone number: Ensure your phone number is correctly verified in WhatsApp.
Be cautious with QR codes: Only scan QR codes from trusted sources, as malicious codes can compromise your account.
Monitor your account activity: Regularly check your WhatsApp account activity, such as login locations and devices.
Use WhatsApp’s built-in security features: Enable WhatsApp’s “Show Security Notifications” feature (Settings > Account > Security) to receive alerts when someone tries to access your account.
Avoid using public computers or public Wi-Fi: Refrain from accessing WhatsApp on public computers or public Wi-Fi networks, as they may be compromised.
Be cautious with links and files: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening files from unknown sources, as they may contain malware.
