The inefficiency of Karachi’s electricity supplier, K-Electric, has once again caused severe distress for residents. Under the pretext of “technical faults,” the duration of loadshedding has been extended across several areas.
Even neighborhoods that had been exempt from power cuts for over a decade are now facing frequent outages.
Key commercial zones such as Urdu Bazaar, Ratan Talao, Preedy Street, and Frere Market are experiencing power outages lasting up to 10 hours at various times of the day.
The prolonged blackouts are severely impacting not only businesses but also the general public, including patients and the elderly. Amid the intense heat and humidity, several individuals have reportedly suffered from heatstroke.
Local traders report that customers visiting for books and stationery purchases are greatly inconvenienced by the erratic electricity supply. Business activity has come to a standstill, and K-Electric officials have failed to offer any satisfactory explanations.
According to trader leader Sajid Yousuf, when citizens protested against the loadshedding, K-Electric officials responded indifferently, allegedly stating: “Loadshedding will continue. Protest if you want to.”
Residents and traders have urged the government to take immediate notice of the situation and reassess K-Electric’s loadshedding policies, warning that widespread public protests could intensify if no action is taken.
