KARACHI: Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon has announced that a full-scale e-ticketing system for traffic violations in Karachi will officially launch on October 27 under the Safe City Programme.
Speaking to reporters, IG Memon said that the Traffic Police and the Safe City team are jointly finalising the technical framework and software programming for the rollout.
He clarified that the issuance of traffic challans had been temporarily halted due to the expiry of a 10-year contract with the company responsible for managing challan machines and fine collections on September 30.
“No new contract has been signed with that company or any other firm,” Memon said, adding that the temporary suspension would not cause any major disruption. “If traffic challans are not issued for a few weeks, it doesn’t make much difference,” he noted.
The police chief explained that some dummy e-challans are currently being generated for system testing, but these are not being sent to citizens.
The new digital e-ticketing system will be rolled out uniformly across Karachi following its formal inauguration by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on October 27.
IG Memon expressed confidence that the initiative would lead to a significant reduction in traffic violations and help improve enforcement under the city’s Safe City modernisation drive.
