Karachi-Sukkur Motorway (M6) project is finally gaining momentum, with construction expected to commence this year. The federal government has indicated plans to collaborate with the Sindh government on this major infrastructure initiative, which aims to enhance connectivity and stimulate commercial activity in the region by linking Karachi Port to the Sukkur Motorway.
Federal Minister for Communications Aleem Khan announced the project, emphasizing its importance in improving transport links between northern and southern Pakistan. By connecting Karachi Port directly to Sukkur, the M6 will serve as a critical artery for trade and logistics.
The motorway will be financed through a public-private partnership, with an invitation extended to the Sindh provincial government to join the venture. If the partnership does not materialize, the federal government has committed to fully fund the project.
The completed M6 motorway is projected to generate substantial economic benefits, with an estimated revenue of PKR 3,000 billion over a 25-year period.
Unlike earlier plans that routed the motorway through Hyderabad, the final decision to connect Karachi directly to Sukkur was made following an agreement between the federal and Sindh governments. This change is intended to better accommodate port traffic and streamline transportation logistics.
