From January 1 to 25, Karachi witnessed a significant rise in dog bite cases. According to Dr. Romana Farhat, in charge of the Rabies Clinic at Civil Hospital, over 2,000 cases have been reported.
According to a report by Geo news on Tuesday, the hospital currently handles approximately 150 cases of dog bites daily. Similarly, Dr. Irfan, the emergency in charge at Jinnah Hospital, revealed that 1,500 cases of dog bites have been reported at their facility within the past 25 days.
Health experts emphasize the critical importance of immediate first aid for dog bite wounds, such as thorough washing with soap and water. Additionally, completing the anti-rabies vaccine and protective treatment regimen is essential to prevent complications.
Dog bites pose significant health hazards, primarily due to the risk of rabies, a fatal viral infection that attacks the nervous system.
Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, making timely vaccination the only effective preventative measure. Infected individuals may experience symptoms such as fever, pain, and confusion, progressing to paralysis and death if untreated.
