KARACHI: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has announced what it described as major relief for residents of Karachi seeking to obtain or renew their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs), as work on several new mega registration centres across the city nears completion.
According to reports, the establishment of large NADRA centres in Malir, Surjani Town and DHA City, along with the upgradation of existing offices, has entered its final phase.
Authorities expect the facilities to become operational later this month, significantly easing pressure on overcrowded registration centres in the metropolis.
Officials said the new mega centre in Surjani Town is close to completion and will cater to residents from Gulzar-i-Hijri, Jamali Pul, the Super Highway and surrounding localities. Six counters have already been made functional at the facility, where around 200 applicants are expected to be served daily.
Meanwhile, the NADRA centre located near Gul Ahmed Textile has undergone expansion and complete renovation. The facility, which previously operated with only three counters, has now been upgraded into a larger centre with seven counters, increasing its daily processing capacity from around 100 applicants to nearly 300.
Separately, a newly established NADRA centre inside DHA City on the Super Highway has also been completed. Officials said the centre would initially operate with two counters and provide services to between 80 and 100 citizens daily, benefiting residents of DHA City, Nooriabad, Jhimpir and nearby areas.
The move comes amid persistent complaints by Karachi residents over long queues, overcrowding and delays at NADRA offices, particularly in densely populated districts where citizens often wait hours to process identity documents.
