The first case of monkeypox (mpox) case has been reported in Karachi this year.
According to local media reports citing hospital sources, the infection was confirmed after the patient tested positive for mpox, following which the patient was shifted to the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital.
Reports said that the affected individual has now been discharged from the hospital and moved to another facility. The patient had recently traveled from abroad.
According to health department sources, several suspected cases of mpox have been reported in different hospitals so far this year.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus, part of the orthopoxvirus family.
It spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact, respiratory droplets and intimate relations. The illness typically presents with fever, swollen lymph nodes, and distinctive lesions, and while most patients recover, severe disease can occur in those with weakened immunity.
