Sindh health authorities confirmed the first case of mpox in Karachi on Saturday after a 28-year-old resident of Shah Latif Town tested positive for the virus.
According to the health department, the patient contracted the virus from his wife, who recently returned from an international trip and developed symptoms.
The infected individual has been placed in an isolation ward, with strict precautionary measures in place to prevent further spread.
In response, health officials have intensified screening at airports and border entry points. Authorities have urged the public to stay vigilant as they continue to monitor the situation.
Pakistan reported its first mpox case of 2025 on January 25, when a passenger arriving from the Gulf tested positive at Peshawar airport.
Previously, in 2023, the country had confirmed nine cases, all linked to travelers returning from the Middle East and other regions.
Mpox, a viral disease related to smallpox, spreads through close contact and contaminated materials. While fatality rates vary by strain, the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that those at higher risk include infants, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.
