In Karachi’s Lyari Baghdadi area, three more bodies were recovered from under the rubble of the building, bringing the death toll to 15. Twelve injured people have been shifted to the hospital.
The rescue operation in-charge has expressed concern that eight to ten people may still be trapped under the debris, while a 40-day-old baby girl was rescued alive from the rubble. Even after 22 hours, the debris removal work is ongoing. DC South Javed Nabi has stated that the affected people have been accommodated in government quarters.
According to the report, six families were residing in the collapsed building, and the staircase of the adjacent building also collapsed. The Sindh government has formed a high-level committee to investigate, which will identify those responsible and submit its report to the Minister of Local Government within three days.
The Sindh Minister of Local Government had also issued orders to suspend the SBCA officers of the concerned area.
It should be noted that fatalities due to building collapses in Karachi are not happening for the first time; previously as well, multiple buildings have collapsed and several people have lost their lives.
Officials believe that institutions, including SBCA have failed to enforce relevant laws during the increasing construction in the city, which has become the biggest reason for such accidents and deaths.
