The legendary in-ring career of John Cena officially came to a close on Saturday night, as the 17-time World Champion made his final WWE appearance, losing a hard-fought battle against Gunther in a symbolic “passing of the torch” main event.
Cena, 48, concluded his 23-year career at WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event at the Capital One Arena. The emotional farewell was a fitting tribute to the man whose career was defined by the motto of Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect.
In a grueling 23-minute contest, Cena showcased the resilience and fighting spirit that made him a global icon. However, he ultimately fell short against the dominance of the two-time World Heavyweight Champion, Gunther.
The unexpected finish came when Cena was forced to tap out to a relentless sleeper hold applied by Gunther.
The submission marked only the fifth time in Cena’s legendary career that he has submitted, a gesture that immediately cemented Gunther’s standing as a major force in the company.
Following the defeat, the atmosphere transitioned from disappointment to celebration. The entire WWE locker room, including current champions and fellow legends, emptied out to surround the ring, paying a rare and heartfelt tribute to the departing icon.
Cena took several minutes to soak in the deafening “Thank You Cena!” chants from the sold-out crowd. In a final, symbolic act, Cena removed his signature sneakers and wristbands, leaving them placed reverently in the center of the ring a traditional gesture signifying a wrestler’s retirement.
“It’s been a pleasure serving you all these years. Thank you,” Cena said to the camera as he made his final salute and walked up the ramp, closing the book on one of the most decorated and influential careers in professional wrestling history.
Cena now shifts his focus entirely to his successful Hollywood career, though he has signed on for a multi-year deal to remain an ambassador for the WWE.
