Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba wins Dhaka University student union elections for first time since 1971

In a historic development, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir (Islamic Jamiat Talaba), has achieved a landmark victory in the student union elections at Dhaka University, the largest and most prestigious academic institution in Bangladesh. Following the announcement of results, supporters celebrated with great enthusiasm, chanting slogans in honor of the martyrs.

After the victory, members of Islami Chhatra Shibir expressed gratitude to Allah and remembered the sacrifices made from 1971 until the downfall of Sheikh Hasina’s regime last year.

According to supporters, this victory is a continuation of the sacrifices of those martyrs who laid down their lives for the supremacy of Islam and truth — including leaders like Shaheed Abdul Malik.

It is worth noting that Abdul Malik was a leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir at Dhaka University and is considered the first martyr of Islami Jamiat Talaba. He was brutally killed by Awami League thugs on 15 August 1969.

Leaders of Chhatra Shibir said this success is not just an electoral win but marks the beginning of a new era. They stated that the blood of the martyrs has not gone in vain and that the new generation has now defined its ideological direction.

They further declared that the day is not far when this land will shine with the light of “La ilaha illallah”.

It should be noted that prior to the partition of the country, Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (Islamic Jamiat Talaba) opposed the breakup of Pakistan and supported the unity of the country in what was then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). As a result, after the creation of Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir faced brutal violence, killings, and executions.

In particular, Sheikh Hasina and her party Awami League were determined to eliminate Jamaat-e-Islami altogether. However, today’s events have proven that ideological movements cannot be extinguished through violence. The results of the Dhaka University union elections stand as clear evidence of that.
