Tourism is a huge source of income for many countries however, too many tourists sometimes become a nuisance, as Spainians have been protesting against what they call “overtourism”.
Spain attracted a record 94 million tourists last year, making the Southern European nation famous for its Mediterranean coastline, sweeping landscapes and historic cities among the most visited countries on earth.
The surge in tourism has led to complaints from some Spaniards about overcrowding, water use, and housing affordability. Spain’s government is addressing these concerns, particularly around rising home and rental prices in big cities. However, Spain is not halting tourism, which accounts for about 12% of its GDP.
Is Spain imposing a ban on tourism?
No, but some cities are regulating tourism rental properties. Malaga, an Andalusian port city, will prohibit new rental properties in 43 neighborhoods where rentals exceed 8% of the residential stock. Barcelona plans to close its 10,000 short-term rental apartments to protect the housing supply for residents.

Visitors renting a car or booking hotel stays will need to file more paperwork due to a new law requiring hotel owners and car rental companies to send personal information to the government for national security reasons.
