Is attack on Hezbollah beginning of war in the region?

Ambassador Dr. Jamil by Ambassador Dr. Jamil
September 28, 2024

Despite turning Gaza into a heap of ruins, Israel’s heart has not found peace. After killing 41,600 Palestinians in Gaza, Israel has now turned its attention towards Lebanon, where for the past week, bombs and explosives have been raining down. However, last night, Israel crossed all limits.

Israel dropped a 2,000-kilogram bunker buster bomb in residential areas of Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, demolishing several buildings.

According to reports so far, hundreds have been martyred, and many are still trapped under the rubble, where even ambulances are struggling to reach.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the smoldering embers in Lebanon are turning into a blazing fire, and these flames threaten to engulf the region. The Israeli army chief has made it clear that Israel will continue its assaults on Lebanon until its objectives are met.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also stated that the only way to achieve their goals in Lebanon is by eliminating Hassan Nasrallah. Reports regarding yesterday’s bombings suggest that, in an attempt to target Hezbollah’s headquarters and Hassan Nasrallah, a densely populated area was attacked. Israeli media is now claiming that Hezbollah’s leader’s daughter and two key leaders were martyred in the attack.

Hezbollah’s silence over the past several hours suggests that their fighters and offices have suffered significant damage.

On the other hand, the Iranian Supreme Leader has called a meeting of Iran’s Security Council, where key decisions are expected. Iran has also stated that if any harm comes to Hezbollah’s leader, their leadership will continue, indicating that Iran suspects some key Hezbollah leaders may have been martyred.

It is important to note that Iran’s “Axis of Resistance” includes Yemen’s Houthis, Iraqi fighters, and Hezbollah warriors, with proxy cells active in several Gulf countries. If Iran activates them, the region could face turmoil.

Meanwhile, in New York, the United Nations General Assembly held a meeting. The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries gave a statement outside the General Assembly last night, calling the Israeli attack on Lebanon extremely dangerous.

It seems unlikely that the resolution being discussed in the UN Security Council, which calls for a 21-day ceasefire, will pass, especially given America’s double standards. While on one hand, the U.S. speaks of peace, on the other, it has already supplied Israel with nearly 20,000 tons of bombs and explosives, with supplies still ongoing.

Israel has also stated that they have no qualms about pushing Lebanon back into the Stone Age. The current assault on Lebanon is unlike anything seen in the wars of 1982 or 2006. The death toll appears to be surpassing both of those conflicts.

The Israeli army chief even said that Israel still has advanced military technologies yet to be deployed in Lebanon. A few days ago, Israel caused significant damage in Lebanon by detonating devices like pagers and walkie-talkies.

Last night, while Beirut was being bombarded on one side, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu made it clear in his UN speech that Iran is the real enemy, and until Iran’s nuclear capabilities are destroyed, the threat will remain. Referring to the “Arc of Crisis,” he included Iran, Iraq, and Syria.

On the other hand, Netanyahu spoke of the “Arc of Blessing,” which involves connecting Saudi Arabia, India, and other countries through railway and communication systems to Europe, signaling the start of new avenues of development. He emphasized that Israel has the power to isolate Iran on the global stage, and they need international support to do so.

Looking at the geopolitical situation in the region amid Israel’s ongoing attacks on Lebanon, it’s clear that Iran’s nuclear enrichment program has long been a thorn in Israel’s side. Israel has already planned to attack Iran and destroy its facilities.

It now seems that Israel’s desire to expand the war is coming true, with the next target being Iran. This would be a crucial step toward Israel’s aim of targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Iran has no choice but to support Hezbollah. If Israel continues its attacks on Hezbollah, Iran will be forced to enter the war, which is precisely what Israel wants. If Iran does this, the U.S. will also step in to assist Israel, as it has already stated that it does not want war in the region but will not stand idle if Israel is attacked.

This means that Israel could attack Iran, counting on U.S. support. For this reason, U.S. naval fleets and equipment have been deployed to the region. It is also important to note that Russia is interested in keeping the U.S. busy in the Middle East so it can complete its military operations in Ukraine, with China’s quiet support.

China, which usually relies on diplomacy, would not want Middle Eastern countries to lose faith in it, as these nations had begun turning to China for economic cooperation. This could deal a blow to the U.S.’s China containment policy. Countries that had been moving toward China might start leaning back toward the U.S., seeing its power.

Lastly, it is worth noting that this war could cause significant damage to countries with weak economies, like Pakistan. This would be a difficult challenge for their people to endure. It is hoped that the leaders of these nations, especially Pakistan, will plan in a way that minimizes harm to their people in the coming times.
