Internet users across Pakistan may experience slow internet speeds and potential service interruptions on January 15, as maintenance work is scheduled on a major submarine internet cable in the country.
According to internet service provider Nayatel, the maintenance is set to begin around 2:00 PM and could take approximately eight hours, during which internet performance nationwide may be affected.
In an email sent to customers, Nayatel said that the repair is being carried out on an international submarine cable and is unavoidable. Although the company did not provide specific details about the cable’s location or the fault, users may experience reduced internet speeds.
Submarine cables are critical for Pakistan’s international data traffic, and any disruption can impact browsing, streaming, online work, and other digital services.
It is worth noting that at the beginning of this month, Pakistan also experienced large-scale internet disruptions. On January 1, 2026, users nationwide reported severe slowdowns and outages, which lasted for more than two days due to a fault in an upstream internet provider.
Pakistan relies on a limited number of submarine cables for global internet access. While maintenance is necessary, its effects on users are significant. During repairs, data is rerouted through alternative paths, but internet speeds may still slow down.
