GENEVA: International day to end impunity for crimes against journalists is being observed today, including in Pakistan.
According to the details, hundreds of journalists are killed in the line of duty all over the world every year. The incidents of violence, kidnappings, and serious human rights violations against the journalistic community are increasing day by day. International news agencies said that the journalist community is considered as the fourth pillar of the state, but when news is published or broadcast against them, corrupt elements erupt and media representatives are attacked.
Numerous incidents of violence against media representatives have been reported around the world, including in Pakistan. The United Nations decided to observe International Day every year on November 2, 2013, following the assassination of two French journalists in Mali.
The United Nations says the day is aimed at highlighting the importance of the journalistic community and urging every country’s government to ensure the safety of media representatives. The sad fact is that only 1 in 10 journalists’ killers are convicted.
