‘Industrial Water Park’ launched in Karachi to combat scarcity

KARACHI: The Karachi city government has launched a state-of-the-art sewage treatment facility at Site TP-1, marking the establishment of Pakistan’s first “Industrial Water Park,” in what has been described as a decisive move to tackle the chronic water crisis plaguing its industrial zones.

The initiative, launched under the direct instructions of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, aims to transform how the city manages water resources for its manufacturing sector.

The project was fast-tracked after industrialists highlighted severe water shortages to Chairman Bhutto, prompting him to task Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah with an immediate solution.

Under the supervision of Mayor Murtaza Wahab, the Site TP-1 area was designated as an Industrial Water Park, and construction began on an emergency basis. The facility is designed to treat 35 million gallons of sewage daily, converting wastewater into recycled water that meets the specific standards required for industrial use.

During a recent media briefing at the site, Sheikh Humayun Sagheer, a company official, emphasized that water recycling is no longer optional but a critical necessity.

“This is the need of the hour, a practice successfully implemented in many developed countries,” Sagheer stated, noting that the treated sewage will be supplied to industries once the process is fully standardized. The first phase of the project, which includes the modern treatment plant currently operating on a trial basis, is scheduled for a formal inauguration on June 30.

Beyond the engineering feat, the project incorporates significant environmental sustainability measures.

As part of the development, 5,000 trees have already been planted within the park’s premises to improve the local microclimate, with further greening efforts ongoing. While the initial infrastructure for supplying recycled water to industries is complete, officials have confirmed that the capacity will be expanded over time to meet the growing demands of Karachi’s industrial heartland.
