Indian filmmaker Alankrita Shrivastava has decided to direct a movie based on Qandeel Baloch, the social media sensation who was murdered in honour killing.

According to Variety, the upcoming project will be made alongside producers Vikas Sharma, and Sunny Khanna. The filmmaker and the producers have acquired the rights to the book The Sensational Life and Death of Qandeel Baloch by Sanam Maher.

Shrivastava, who is also known for her Netflix series Bombay Begums, said that when Qandeel Baloch was murdered in 2016, she was ‘shaken up’. She called the act as a ‘heinous honor killing’. Shrivastava said that she could not stop thinking about her.

Shrivastava mentioned that she sees this movie as an ode to the courageous spirit of Qandeel Baloch and that it will show her rise to fame.

Born as Fouzia Azeem, Qandeel Baloch was murdered in July 2016 by her own brother in the name of honour killing. According to police, Qandeel Baloch’s brother was angry because his photos and videos went viral, on which he killed them in the name of honor and escaped.

However, this year in February, her brother was acquitted by the Lahore High Court. She was 26-years-old when she became famous for her posts that were deemed suggestive and immoral by many in the country.
