Panic spread at a military camp in the Indian state of Odisha when the sound of a sudden gunshot shattered the silence.
Officers and personnel rushed to the scene to find a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) member lying on the ground in a pool of blood, taking his final breaths.
According to Indian media reports, the personnel shot himself at close range in the temple using his official service rifle.
The sound of the gunfire caused chaos within the camp, and the injured soldier was immediately shifted to a nearby military hospital, where doctors made every effort to save his life. However, he succumbed to his injuries due to excessive blood loss.
Doctors stated that the bullet was fired from extremely close range, making the wound fatal. Police confirmed that the soldier’s official rifle was found at the scene, and the post-mortem report has also verified suicide.
Odisha police said no suicide note was recovered from the soldier’s room. Preliminary investigations revealed that he had been under severe mental stress and anxiety due to not being granted a posting near his home.
After completion of legal formalities, the body was sent to the soldier’s native village.
An inquiry committee has also been constituted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Critics, however, argue that such inquiry reports in India rarely become public and often fail to fix responsibility.
