Just days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced global embarrassment following Pakistan’s military success on May 10, New Delhi has expelled another Pakistani diplomat, declaring him persona non grata for allegedly engaging in activities “not in keeping with his official status.”
In what analysts view as a face-saving diplomatic maneuver, India instructed the Pakistani official to leave the country within 24 hours.
The move comes as the Modi government attempts to divert attention from the military and political fallout of the recent India-Pakistan standoff.
The term persona non grata—Latin for “unwelcome person”—is the harshest diplomatic measure a host country can take, effectively ejecting a foreign envoy or official from its territory.
Indian authorities have issued a démarche to the Pakistani High Commissioner in New Delhi, citing the alleged conduct of the expelled diplomat. However, insiders suggest the action is more symbolic, aimed at appeasing domestic criticism after India’s battlefield setback.
Sources in Islamabad indicate that Pakistan is preparing a robust diplomatic response, mirroring the strength it demonstrated on the war front.
