The District and Sessions Court in Islamabad has sentenced advocate Iman Mazari and her husband Hadi Ali to 17 years in prison each in a controversial tweets case.
Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka delivered a brief verdict in the case and also issued a 22-page written order.
Under Section 9 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), the court sentenced both accused to five years in prison each, along with a fine of Rs5 million.
Under Section 10, they were sentenced to ten years each and fined PKR 30 million. Additionally, under Section 26A, they received two years’ imprisonment each and a fine of PKR 1 million.
Overall, the court sentenced Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali to 17 years in prison each and fines totalling PKR 36 million.
However, the court acquitted both under Section 11 of PECA.
Earlier during the hearing, Iman Mazari had stated that they were boycotting the court proceedings, following which they did not participate in the session.
