The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially released the Women’s ODI Team of the Year for 2024. Notably, no Pakistani player has been featured in the exclusive lineup.
The team consists of three players from England, two from each of India, Australia, and South Africa, and one from the West Indies and Sri Lanka. Although many Pakistani cricketers did well during the trials, no one was selected for the final team.
South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt has been elected as the Women’s ODI Team of the Year, which also comprises some of the best cricketers around the world. Other players in the team are India’s Smriti Mandhana, Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu, West Indies’ Hayley Matthews, South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp, Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner, Australia’s Annabel Sutherland, England’s Amy Jones, India’s Deepti Sharma, England’s Sophie Ecclestone, and England’s Kate Cross.
Earlier, the ICC had also announced the Men’s ODI Team of the Year, which included three Pakistani cricketers—Saud Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf—highlighting their exceptional performances in the format over the past year.
The dominant Sri Lankans will spearhead the tournament, with four in the team: Charith Asalanka will be the team captain, demonstrating his leadership qualities as well as his batting excellence; Kusal Mendis as wicket-keeper; and Pathum Nissanka and star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga in middle-order batting as well as an indispensable element during the course of the year.
