Residents of Karachi and other parts of Sindh have been advised to prepare for an intense heatwave as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts extremely high temperatures from Monday to Friday.
The weather alert warns that upper Sindh districts could experience temperatures as high as 51°C, while Karachi is expected to record maximum temperatures between 39°C and 42°C from June 9 to 12.
According to the PMD, the heatwave is being caused by a strong high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, which will keep daytime temperatures 4°C to 6°C above normal across the province. The intense heat may also trigger isolated dust storms in plain areas.
Districts including Sukkur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Dadu, Ghotki, Khairpur, and Shaheed Benazirabad are expected to face temperatures ranging from 48°C to 51°C. Meanwhile, Tharparkar, Badin, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Jamshoro, and Sanghar are likely to see temperatures between 42°C and 45°C.
Authorities have directed district administrations and disaster management bodies to implement precautionary measures.
The public, especially children, women, and elderly citizens, is urged to avoid direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm, stay hydrated, and use water carefully during the heatwave period.
