Karachi: Investigators have completed the initial report into the Gul Plaza fire, drawing primarily on statements from eyewitnesses and those affected.
According to the report, the blaze was not caused by a short circuit but was most likely ignited by a match or a lighter.
Details reveal that the fire first broke out at a shop selling artificial flowers, where children were reportedly playing at the time. During this activity, the fire started, with children said to have been playing with matches or a lighter inside the shop.
Sources said the fire likely caught hold of combustible items in the shop before spreading to the building’s electrical wiring.
As the fire erupted, people inside the building rushed towards the exits; however, panic ensued due to the closure of several doors.
At the time of the incident, most shops in the building were open. A grill installed on the rooftop access route further restricted movement.
The fire also destroyed most of the building’s CCTV system, preventing the recovery of detailed video footage of the incident.
