The government has decided to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court (SC) from 17 to 23, including the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
A bill to expand the SC’s bench will be introduced in the National Assembly on Friday, November 1.
It is worth mentioning that PML-N’s Barrister Danyal Chaudhary has already presented this bill, which aims to address the backlog of cases by expanding judicial capacity. According to the bill, adding more judges will help ensure timely hearings and decisions. It emphasizes the need for experts in specialized areas such as cybercrime, environmental law, and international trade to provide more informed rulings.
The amendment also proposes that increasing the number of judges will help distribute caseloads more evenly, reducing pressure on individual judges.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar dismissed any speculation surrounding the introduction of the 27th constitutional amendment.
“The 27th constitutional amendment is merely speculation at this time. No new constitutional amendments are in the pipeline,” the law minister said while talking to Samaa TV.
Tarar affirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the recently approved 26th amendment, emphasizing that it will bring positive results for the country. “The 26th amendment has been enacted, and its implementation is our focus,” he added.
