KARACHI: Sindh Governor Imran Ismail while expressing concerns over the arrest of opposition leader in Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh has demanded removal of Sindh Police chief Mushtaq Mehar.
In a press conference on Monday, Governor Imran Ismail lashed out at the Sindh IGP Mushtaq Mahar, saying he hoped PM Imran would take “strict notice” of the incident with Sheikh.
The governor said that a letter has been written to the Prime Minister Imran Khan for the transfer of IG Sindh. Governor Ismail alleged that IG Sindh Mushtaq Mehar has political affiliation and the pressure on the police is clearly visible.
“If IG Sindh joins a province and becomes a party, then a drastic step can be taken,” he said. Ismail claimed that Sheikh was “kept locked up at night along with other people and beaten”.
“I want to send a clear note to the IGP that this is the last chance for you to take police decisions on fairness and justice.” The governor shared that he called the provincial police chief yesterday and was told whatever was happening was according to the law.
Talking about the FIR registered against Sheikh and others, he alleged that police had deliberately chosen not to name anyone so they could “arrest whoever they want and keep adding names to the list”.
Police security for all members of the provincial and National assemblies belonging to the opposition PTI was withdrawn and they were forced to make their own arrangments, Ismail also claimed.
on Monday, Haleem Adil Sheikh alleged that the Sindh government “through 50-60 criminals, prisoners, goons got me attacked in jail”. He also alleged the Sindh government was “manhandling, torturing and harassing” PTI workers in jail.
In a video statement, Sheikh said he had come to Karachi’s Jinnah Hospital allegedly after he was beaten up while in jail, adding that PTI workers, including Samir Mir Shaikh, Amjad, Hafeez Chandio and three other people who are in Central Jail are being “tortured”.
Meanwhile, Maritime Affairs Minister Ali Zaidi said that Sheikh was hospitalised after being attacked by “50 PPP goons inside Central Jail Karachi”.
He vowed to raise the matter with Prime Minister Imran Khan. “High time that action is taken against IGP-Sindh, Home Sec & an incompetent Chief Secretary,” he said in a tweet.
Spoke to Sindh Assembly opposition leader @HaleemAdil who is admitted in a hospital as he was attacked by 50 PPP goons inside Central Jail KHI. Will raise this issue with the PM office. High time that action is taken against IGP-Sindh, Home Sec & an incompetent Chief Secretary.

Sheikh, who was remanded in judicial custody by an anti-terrorism court on Feb 19, was detained last week in a case related to violence, firing, attempted murder and causing terror during the by-polls in the PS-88 constituency of Malir.
PPP Sindh gov is a classic example of lawlessness & tyranny! My fellow insafiyans & PTI workers are being manhandled, tortured & harassed in jail! @samirmir is facing brutal treatment only because he has insider knowledge about PPP’s criminal tactics! pic.twitter.com/9tEVyFAUM2
