Former Army Chief General (Retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa has recently been thrust into the spotlight following the DG ISPR’s remarks about the resettlement of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the country.
Now, prominent Pakistani journalist Zahid Gishkori has reported that General Bajwa is currently under restrictions that limit his interactions.
“The former Army Chief of Pakistan, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, has been advised against meeting people,” Gishkori said, highlighting that he does not have the requisite permission to engage with others.
Typically, former Army Chiefs in Pakistan face a two-year restriction on meetings after their retirement. However, Gishkori said that General Bajwa’s term of restrictions has already expired.
Meanwhile, Omar Ayub Khan, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and a senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has alleged that it was General Bajwa who pushed for negotiations with the TTP. Responding to the DG ISPR’s statements, Omar Ayub clarified on X (formerly Twitter), “DG ISPR should know that it was General Bajwa who advocated peace talks with TTP.”
He further elaborated that during a National Security Committee (NSC) meeting in 2021, General Bajwa told participants that “all conflicts end through negotiations.” This meeting, according to Ayub, was attended by senior leadership and parliamentarians from PPP, PMLN, PTI, and other parties represented in parliament.
