RAHIM YAR KHAN: After a long wait of three years, flight operations from Sheikh Zayed International Airport have resumed once again, marking a significant milestone for domestic air connectivity in South Punjab.
The resumption was marked by the arrival of South Air’s inaugural flight from Karachi. Carrying 72 passengers, the flight landed at Rahim Yar Khan on schedule, where passengers were given a warm and festive welcome at the terminal.
The development comes as South Air, the country’s recently launched private carrier, continues to be warmly welcomed across the country for expanding air access to under served cities.
The resumption holds special significance as the airport had remained non-operational since sustaining damage last year. In May 2025, the Sheikh Zayed International Airport in Rahim Yar Khan district of Punjab — a landmark viewed as a symbol of friendship between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates — was struck by an air-to-surface missile fired by India, causing significant damage to its infrastructure, including the Royal Lounge. Large craters in runways were also left following the strikes.
It should be noted that this airport, built in 1993 and named after the late UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, has long served as a symbol of the historic and brotherly ties between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.
Airport officials said that full restoration work has been completed and regular flight operations will now continue, with more routes expected to be added in the coming weeks.
