The first supermoon of this year will be visible tonight. Scientists believe that the supermoon will appear after sunset, while such a spectacle is usually seen only 3 to 4 times a year.
According to a SUPARCO spokesperson, during the supermoon, the Moon will be about 224,000 miles (360,540 kilometers) away from Earth, appearing 6.6% larger and 13% brighter than an average full moon.
Scientists state that the Moon completes its orbit around the Earth in about 27.3 days, and during this time, it comes closest to Earth only on rare occasions. The supermoon will also be visible in Pakistan.
The supermoon will rise from the east right after sunset and set in the west before sunrise.
Two more supermoons will be visible this year. The brightest supermoon of the year is expected on November 5, 2025, while the third supermoon will be visible on December 5, 2025, according to SUPARCO.
Astronomers explain that a supermoon occurs when the Moon, while orbiting in its elliptical path, reaches its closest point to Earth, making it appear significantly larger and brighter than usual — which is why it is called a supermoon.
The Moon’s orbit around the Earth is not perfectly circular but elliptical. According to scientists, the Moon’s maximum distance from Earth can reach about 406,000 kilometers, while during a supermoon, its minimum distance can be around 356,000 kilometers.
