ISLAMABAD: The federal government has officially decided to privatize Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), approving the sale of a 51% to 100% stake in the national carrier.
The decision was finalized during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Privatization, presided over by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad.
Speaking on the occasion, Dar highlighted that privatization aims to alleviate the financial strain on the national treasury while unlocking PIA’s full potential.
Following the sale, administrative control of the airline will also be transferred to private investors.
The deputy prime minister underscored that the move was made in the broader national interest to ensure PIA’s long-term sustainability and efficiency.
This development follows the Privatization Commission Board’s approval of a transaction structure for the second attempt to privatize PIA. The decision was taken during a meeting on March 19, chaired by Muhammad Ali, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Privatization.
