Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial has issued a stern warning, stating that individuals flaunting expensive clothes, homes, and vehicles are now under scrutiny.
Notices have already been issued to 30 people who underreported their assets on social media, and daily reports of actions against tax evaders are being compiled.
In an informal conversation with the media in Islamabad, Langrial highlighted that previously, taxed and untaxed sugar were priced differently, but now anyone holding untaxed sugar stocks will be identified, and strict action will be taken against them.
He added that sales tax collection from the sugar industry has increased by Rs 40 billion in the past year.
A Chief Commissioner Enforcement has been appointed to oversee operations against tax evaders, and all actions nationwide will be conducted under his supervision.
The FBR Chairman also noted that stringent measures are being implemented to curb smuggling. Smugglers have previously harmed customs officials, with two tax officers having been martyred in the line of duty.
Despite these challenges, Langrial emphasized that efforts against smuggling will continue unabated.
