At least 10 people were killed in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday as heavy downpour continued to pummel the hilly areas of the province, rescue and weather officials said.
A “vigorous monsoon activity” was anticipated in the upper and central regions of the country through July 30, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, which issued a red alert for the following three days. This activity was expected to cause flooding and landslides.
Similarly, authorities braced for the ‘worst’ floods in Ravi and Sutlej since 1998 after the catchment areas in India received incessant rainfall during the ongoing monsoon season, filling three dams on these rivers much earlier than expected.
A mother and her three children were killed in a house collapse in Mansehra, and a laborer was killed and two others were hurt in a landslide in Mardan.
After being transported to a hospital, Khatoon Baidar, her children Abdul Sattar, 5, Abdul Jabar, 9, and Haleema Bibi, 2, were all declared dead.
The fifth straight day of the torrential monsoon rain that began last week caused more destruction in some areas of Mansehra. The latest deaths have brought the total to 12 now.
In Balochistan, five more people were killed as a result of torrential rainfall, which also triggered flash floods in Panjgur. The non-stop spell threatened dams in Panjgur, which were filled to their capacity.
