The Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) has released a new report outlining the rights, privileges and facilities granted to the Leaders of the Opposition in the National Assembly and the Senate.
According to the report, the appointments of opposition leaders in both houses have been finalised. Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas has been appointed as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, while Mahmood Khan Achakzai holds the position in the National Assembly.
FAFEN stated that the Leader of the Opposition is entitled to a salary and benefits equivalent to those of a federal minister. The position carries constitutional importance, and the office-holder is given priority while speaking on the floor of the house.
In terms of financial benefits, the report said the opposition leader receives a basic monthly salary of Rs519,000. This includes an equipment allowance of Rs5,000, a supplementary allowance of Rs6,000, and a utility allowance of Rs22,000.
The opposition leader is also provided with official accommodation and transport facilities. A furnished government residence is allotted, and if it is not availed, a monthly house rent allowance of Rs103,125 is paid. An official vehicle is also provided, with all maintenance costs borne by the government.
FAFEN further noted that the opposition leader may use Pakistan Air Force or government helicopters and aircraft when required.
During official travel, a daily allowance of Rs4,050 is paid, along with a daily stay allowance of Rs4,000 for government accommodation.
In addition, the opposition leader is entitled to staff support, including a private secretary, personal assistant, stenographer, orderly and deputy orderly. Official residence facilities also include a government telephone with free domestic calls, as well as full medical treatment and healthcare services.
