ISLAMABAD: Heavy continuous downpour in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Saturday has left some parts of the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi and surrounding areas flooded, prompting the concerned authorities to declare a rain emergency.
However, rescue services say that thus far there has been no causality or injury reported from any area of the twin cities.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the twin cities have experienced rainfall exceeding 60 millimetres, causing a flood-like situation. It said Shamsabad received 60mm of rain, followed by Chaklala 46mm, Pindi 28mm, Rawat 12mm, Golra 16mm, and Saidpur 20mm of rainfall.
Due to the significant amounts of precipitation, water has accumulated in low-lying areas, disrupting life and creating threats to locals.
Heavy equipment and manpower have been mobilised, according to the Wasa MD, to tackle the rising water levels in a number of locations.
“Draining the excess water and ensuring the security of the impacted communities is our main goal. Work is concentrated on eliminating possible flooding dangers and quickly pumping away water from flooded regions.
According to a Wasa release, the Gawalmandi Bridge is reporting a water flow of 6.5 feet while Leh Nullah, a significant canal, has seen water levels jump to 7.5 feet.
It said the authorities had taken measures to prevent damage and ensure smooth traffic flow by cleaning drainage systems, including critical areas such as Committee Chowk.
“The authorities are committed to managing the emergency situation and will handle any additional challenges that may arise,” Tanveer said, adding most affected areas with accumulated rainwater had been cleared.
