Electricity prices are expected to increase under the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism. During a hearing at NEPRA on the April adjustment request, a proposal was made to raise electricity rates by Rs. 1.73 per unit, potentially impacting consumers nationwide.
During the hearing, officials from the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) stated that the effects of the ongoing regional war were also felt in April, which created various challenges for the energy sector.
According to CPPA, imported LNG was not available during this period. However, in May, LNG contracts and spot cargoes were received, after which LNG-based power plants were activated.
Officials informed NEPRA that electricity consumption declined across all consumer categories except the industrial sector.
Moreover, daily planning for LNG supply over the next two months has been completed to ensure effective electricity generation and fuel availability.
CPPA officials added that consumers will not face major shocks in the monthly fuel adjustments for May, June, and July, as necessary planning has been carried out regarding fuel supply and electricity generation.
