ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to consult Attorney General and other law experts on announcement made by President Arif Alvi, setting April 9 as date of elections in Punjab and KP.

The ECP met here today with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja in the chair to discuss announcement made by President Arif Alvi, setting April 9 as date of elections for KP and Punjab assemblies. The President had announced the date after writing letter and a reminder to the ECP to have consultative meeting on the issue.

In a press release issued today, the electoral watchdog said that a meeting with the AGP and legal experts — the names of whom are still under discussion —has been called for tomorrow (Feb 22).

“In the meeting, it was decided that the ECP will continue to take decisions as per the Constitution and without any pressure,” the electoral watchdog said adding that as per the law and Constitution, the ECP remained prepared to hold polls within 90 days. “But it is nowhere written in the Constitution and law that the ECP will give the date for elections.
“Albeit, after the date of elections is fixed by a lawful authority, the commission is bound to issue an election schedule and hold elections,” the statement said.

It went on to say that the meeting today discussed President Alvi’s directions at length and decided to seek guidance from the AGP and legal experts.
“In this regard, the AGP has been invited for a meeting tomorrow and for consultations, the names of two legal experts are being discussed,” the ECP concluded.
