The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has projected that Eidul Adha is likely to be observed across Pakistan on May 27, based on astronomical calculations for the Zilhajj moon sighting.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Suparco said the new moon for Zilhajj 1447 AH is expected to appear on May 17 at 1:01am.
By sunset later that day, the moon’s age is expected to exceed 18 hours, while the gap between sunset and moonset along coastal areas would be around one hour.
According to the agency, these conditions make the crescent sighting highly possible on the evening of May 17, provided weather conditions remain clear and visibility near the horizon is favourable.
If the moon is sighted as expected, the first day of Zilhajj would begin on May 18, leading to Eidul Adha celebrations on May 27.
However, Suparco clarified that the official announcement regarding the start of the Islamic month will be made by the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee after reviewing witness testimonies and moon sighting reports from across the country.
