KARACHI: The prime suspect in the Dua Mangi kidnapping case escaped from police custody by tricking officers into a false ‘shopping spree’ promise.
According to details, Zohaib Qureshi – the main accused – and his accomplices were brought to city court for a hearing. On the way back to prison, the police officers took him to a shopping centre located at Tariq Road.
CCTV footage shows Qureshi entering the mall wearing a blue shalwar qameez and a dark jacket with a hat. The footage shows him exiting from another gate with shopping bags in hand. Qureshi got into a rickshaw and escapted.
Two police officers have been taken into custody in this regard, while a case against the prime accused has been filed in the Ferozabad Police Station.
CM takes notice
Taking notice of the incident, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered the provincial inspector general and the interior secretary to take strict action against the police officers involved.
The chief minister further ordered the suspension of the Senior Superintendent of Police Court Azam Durrani. CM Murad Ali Shah was informed that the incident was being investigated, and that an FIR had been registered.
He then directed the Sindh police to arrest Zohaib Qureshi immediately and submit a report regarding the incident.
The case
Qureshi along with three others were arrested in the Dua Mangi abduction case. Mangi was kidnapped in November 2019 from Karachi’s DHA. The suspects also shot her friend who was with her during the crime scene.
In October 2021, Mangi identified three suspects including Qureshi as her kidnappers during a hearing at an Anti-Terrorism Court. She said that she could identify only Qureshi, Ali, and Raja as they were the ones who had bundled her into a car and shot Fatah for trying to save her.
