Dr Abdul Qadeer’s demise: PML-N announces Monday as mourning day

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to observe Monday (tomorrow) as a day of mourning across the country on the demise of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan.

Sources said, PML-N President Mian Shehbaz Sharif has announced tomorrow as mourning day across the country and directed the leaders and workers of the party to hold special gatherings.

Shehbaz Sharif said that special gatherings of Fateha Khawani would be attended by party leaders and workers and tributes would be paid to Mohsin Pakistan.

Dr Khan breathed his last Sunday morning after succumbing to serious health conditions. The family of the nuclear physicist has confirmed his passing, saying he was shifted to a hospital in critical care after his health deteriorated.

Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan’s health worsened on Saturday night, after which he was brought to the KRL hospital due to lung’s problem. Doctors attempted to save the scientist’s life but were unsuccessful.

Dr AQ Khan is considered the father of Pakistan’s nuclear programme and is revered at home as a hero for building the Muslim world’s first atomic bomb.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Dr AQ Khan. He said Dr Khan was loved by the nation because of his critical contribution in making Pakistan a nuclear weapon state.

“This has provided us security against an aggressive much larger nuclear neighbour. For the people of Pakistan he was a national icon,” he said. The prime minister added that he will be buried in Faisal Mosque “as per his wishes”.

President Dr Arif Alvi expressed his condolences, saying that he had personally known Dr Khan since 1982. “He helped us develop nation-saving nuclear deterrence, and a grateful nation will never forget his services in this regard,” he said.
