Crypto market surges $33 bn as Shehbaz Sharif’s tweet confirms US-Iran ceasefire

KARACHI: The global cryptocurrency market witnessed a dramatic resurgence in the early hours of Wednesday, adding an estimated $33 billion to its total valuation following a pivotal diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East. The rally was triggered by a tweet from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announcing a 14-day goodwill ceasefire between the United States and Iran. The agreement, facilitated by Pakistan’s mediation, includes a temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime artery that had been under threat of total closure.

With the greatest humility, I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere including Lebanon and elsewhere, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.
I warmly welcome the…

Digital assets responded with immediate volatility to the upside as the risk-off sentiment that dominated early April evaporated.

After languishing under intense pressure at a session low of $67,711, Bitcoin printed a massive green candle and surged over $2,500 in a matter of hours. The apex cryptocurrency broke through the psychological $70,000 barrier with ease, peaking at approximately $72,700 before stabilizing near its current levels. The broader market followed suit as Ethereum and Solana posted gains of over 2% while traders pivoted back into high-growth assets.

While crypto investors cheered, the energy sector faced a sharp correction as well.

The sudden de-escalation of threats to 20% of the world’s oil supply caused crude prices to plummet, with WTI tumbling as much as 16% and briefly sliding below the $100-per-barrel mark. Analysts described the move as a classic geopolitical relief playbook, where the easing of energy-driven inflation fears sent US stock futures soaring and boosted liquidity in the crypto markets.

Market analysts are pointing to the timing of PM Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement as the definitive catalyst. PM Shehbaz Sharif’s request for a deadline extension, issued just hours before a US military deadline, provided the breathing room markets were desperate for.

Experts suggest that the Pakistani-led framework has effectively hit the pause button on a potential global economic catastrophe, with Bitcoin acting as a high-speed barometer for the peace deal. Although the 14-day ceasefire has provided a much-needed reprieve, experts warn that volatility will remain high as the sustainability of this rally depends entirely on whether the temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz evolves into a permanent diplomatic resolution.
