KARACHI: The number of new infections of COVID-19 continued to rise this week, as the positivity ratio in Karachi hit 14 percent on Thursday amid the ongoing third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
According to details, the rise in COVID-19 infections promoted the Sindh government to tighten the already imposed restrictions in place to curb the spread of the virus.
Meanwhile, Karachi’s district administration sealed 64 shops, arrested seven persons, and warned 369. “People do not understand gravity of the situation,” Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said.
The chief minister, on the advice of the experts and members of the task force, has decided that from Friday all shops, including grocery stores, would be closed after 6pm. Restaurants will now not be able to offer takeaways after iftar, but they will be allowed to offer home delivery service.
CM Shah also announced that all recreational places, including Sea View, Hawksbay, and others would be closed to the public, adding that after Sunday, more strict measures would be taken to keep the people of the province restricted within their homes.
On Wednesday, the province reported over 1,000 coronavirus infections and four fatalities. According to a statement issued from the Chief Minister’s House, 1,038 fresh infections emerged when 16,023 samples were tested for the contagion, indicating a positivity rate of 6.4 per cent.
