The Punjab government has approved a proposal to provide 50,000 electric bikes and 5,000 e-taxis on an interest-free basis in the upcoming provincial budget, aiming to support students and unemployed youth while promoting environmentally friendly transportation.
The initiative, cleared for inclusion in the budget for the next fiscal year, is designed to improve mobility and create employment opportunities.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said beneficiaries of the e-taxi scheme would receive interest-free financing and easy installment plans.
The government is also considering additional incentives, including support for vehicle registration costs.
According to the minister, the program reflects the government’s commitment to empowering young people and integrating them into economic activity.
He said the initiative would help generate jobs, encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, and contribute to reducing environmental pollution.
Meanwhile, the provincial government is reviewing its public transport policies ahead of the budget. Authorities are considering linking the continuation of the free public transport facility to fuel prices. A briefing to the chief minister suggested the service could be withdrawn if petrol prices fall to Rs300 per liter.
