When it comes to food, there is no comparison of Karachi in the rest of Pakistan. The greasy puris, spicy cholay, meetha halwa and aloo ki bhaji are the happiest breakfast a Pakistani will ever have.
The more health conscious often complain that they put on weight, but for the desi in us all, there is nothing quite like the greasy Sunday morning puri halwa feast. Halwa puri is said to have originated in the Indian subcontinent, mainly in Punjab, but is also said to be popular in the Terai region of Nepal.
Puri and channay are considered a full meal and had for lunch and dinner in several parts of Pakistan. Here are three places in Karachi that we think you must try Halwa Puri from:
Sohny Sweets:
Located Karachi’s DHA Badar Commercial, the shop’s bustling environs made clear that it benefits from its prominent location. Sohny Sweets offers its delicious ‘Halwa Puri’ on weekends only.
Their yellow-brown halwa is made with congealed/thickened milk (khoya) and sprinkled with assorted nuts. It has to be the most scrumptious halwa one has ever had with puri. The shop sells puri at Rs. 25 only.
Dehlvi Sweets:
Our second stop was Dehlvi Sweets in Karachi’s Landhi Town. Their halwa puri platter comes with spicy bhujia, crispy puri and plenty of halwa. Their bhujia was generous, and definitely deserves to be recommended as one of the better ones in town.
One of the shopkeepers informed that during the week, the shop is frequented by residents of the Walled City, but customers from all over town pour in on the weekends. Their halwa puri is sold for Rs20 a puri.
Kashif Bakers:
For anyone wanting to try out desi breakfast should definitely visit Kashif Bakers, located in North Nazimabad. More than 30 years old, they serve the best halwa in Karachi.
Their halwa puri platter comes with spicy chholay and white-colored halwa. The freshly fried puri had a distinctive aroma and was not chewy or elastic-y. The halwa smelled and tasted very well and its sweetness wasn’t overpowering.
