Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, today inaugurated Phase One of the Malir Expressway, which has been renamed the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Expressway. This six-lane road will provide seamless access to the National Highway, offering a significant improvement in transportation for Karachi residents.
The partial inauguration covered a 9.1km stretch from Qayyumabad to Shah Faisal, with Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also present for the event. According to the Chief Minister’s spokesperson, Bilawal personally drove along Bhutto Road with Murad Ali Shah, inspecting the route from the Shah Faisal intersection to the toll plaza.
In his address, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah highlighted that the Malir Expressway is the largest public-private partnership project in Pakistan, stretching over 39 kilometers. Starting at Korangi Creek Avenue and extending to the Malir River, the project is valued at approximately Rs 55 billion. The expressway is set to become a major transportation corridor for Karachi, equipped with modern infrastructure.
Murad Ali Shah also noted that the Malir Expressway will eventually connect to the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) via DHA and an existing link road. Once completed in 2025, the expressway is expected to provide an alternative route to Shahrah-e-Faisal, linking key industrial zones and significantly reducing traffic congestion on Karachi’s roads.
Provincial Minister Sharjeel Memon emphasized that the expressway would strengthen the link between central Karachi and the motorway, improving connectivity to the National Highway. He added that the new route is expected to benefit businesses, travelers, and industries by reducing road congestion, cutting fuel consumption, and decreasing travel times by up to 50%. Furthermore, it will improve access to industrial hubs such as Dhabeji and Steel Mill.
Minister Memon also mentioned that Bhutto Road has been designed as a high-speed corridor meeting international standards, underscoring the Sindh government’s commitment to advancing economic growth and urban development under Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s leadership.
