In today’s modern world, where air ambulances are used to save lives, the concept of a bicycle ambulance service—recently launched in Karachi—may seem somewhat unconventional. However, it serves a vital purpose: in the densely populated southern port city, many narrow streets and alleys are inaccessible to larger vehicles. To address this, Rescue 1122 has introduced a bicycle ambulance service to provide immediate medical assistance in hard-to-reach areas.
What sets it apart is the deployment of trained female volunteers to operate the bicycle ambulances—marking not only a creative approach to emergency care but also a meaningful advancement in women’s empowerment.
Though modest in appearance, each bicycle ambulance is outfitted with essential medical equipment, including oxygen masks, glucose testing kits, nebulizers, and first-aid supplies, allowing volunteers to administer prompt, on-site medical assistance.

Brigadier (Retired) Tariq Qadir, Chief Executive Officer of Rescue 1122, highlighted the initiative’s dual benefits: its environmentally friendly nature and its promotion of gender inclusion. He described the program as a critical step in bringing primary healthcare services to marginalized communities.
The female volunteers expressed pride in their participation, emphasizing their strong sense of responsibility and dedication to public service.
