KARACHI: The Bomb Disposal Unit has confirmed that a Russian-made RGD-1 grenade was used in the attack on the under-construction office of Jamaat-e-Islami in Lyari’s Phulpati Lane, which left three party workers injured.
In its preliminary report, the BDU said it recovered the grenade lever and about 20 fragments from the site.
The explosion left a crater measuring 3 inches deep and 8 inches wide.
The report noted that 60 to 70 per cent of past grenade attacks in Lyari have involved Russian-made grenades.
Meanwhile, JI Karachi Ameer Munem Zafar visited the injured at Civil Hospital following the incident. Speaking to the media, he termed the attack “the worst act of terrorism” and questioned how the attackers managed to flee from a densely populated area.
“Lawlessness and unrest in Karachi and Sindh have made citizens insecure,” Mr. Zafar said. “A large number of people in Lyari have placed their trust in Jamaat-e-Islami. The opposition is in a state of panic due to the party’s growing popularity.”
He vowed that the party’s _Haq Do Lyari_ campaign and _Badal Do Nizam_ movement would continue “at all costs”.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. No arrest has been reported so far.
