Australia’s hopes of reaching the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 ended on Tuesday after the Group B match between Zimbabwe and Ireland in Pallekele was abandoned due to persistent rain.
The washout meant both teams were awarded one point each, allowing Zimbabwe to advance to the Super Eight with five points.
Ireland also gained a point, but the result dashed Australia’s chances, leaving the defending 2021 champions unable to progress despite having one remaining group match.
Australia had already lost two of its three group-stage games, including a heavy eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka on Monday and a previous loss to Zimbabwe. With just two points on the table and one match left, even a win would not have been enough for Australia to overtake Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka topped Group B after winning all three of their opening matches, securing an early place in the Super Eight stage.
The remaining fixtures, including Australia versus Oman and Sri Lanka versus Zimbabwe, will now have no impact on Australia’s tournament fate.
