President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir to the country’s most important military position as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
This decision comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif forwarded a summary recommending that Field Marshal Asim Munir be appointed as Chief of Defence Forces in addition to serving as Chief of Army Staff.
Who is General Syed Asim Munir?
Pakistan’s current Army Chief, Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir Ahmed, is regarded as a highly experienced leader in defence and national security.
He enjoys the full confidence of the nation, and under his leadership, the Army has remained strong and active. Known for his professional military expertise, General Asim Munir is also a Hafiz-e-Quran—an attribute seen as symbolic of his moral and spiritual grounding.
Early life and education
General Asim Munir was born in 1968 in the town of Kunjah in Jhelum district. His family has traditionally served in the military and public sector.
After completing his early education, he joined the Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul, and received his commission in 1986 as part of the 44th Long Course.
He was inducted into the Frontier Force Regiment, which plays a central role in defending Pakistan’s borders.
Military career, professional training
General Munir served in various infantry units and quickly rose through the ranks due to his competence. He graduated from Command and Staff College Quetta with distinction and was awarded the Sword of Honour.
He later earned a Master’s degree from the National Defence University, Islamabad, which strengthened his strategic and planning abilities.
Key positions, service
Throughout his military career, General Asim Munir has held several important appointments, including twice serving as Director General of Military Intelligence (ISI). In 2021, he became Commander of the XV Corps in Gujranwala, was promoted to senior general in 2022, and in November 2022 was appointed as Pakistan’s 11th Chief of Army Staff.
Operation Banyan Marsous
Under the leadership of Field Marshal Asim Munir, the Pakistan Army undertook Operation Banyan Marsous, which was part of the Pakistan–India conflict of May 2025.
During this period, Pakistani forces reportedly shot down a Rafale fighter jet along with six other Indian aircraft, achieving significant success on the battlefield. His strategic decision-making not only ensured military victories but also boosted national morale.
Leadership and public confidence
Under General Asim Munir’s leadership, the Pakistan Army has curbed insurgency in Balochistan, stabilised the Afghan border, and effectively responded to Indian aggression in Kashmir.
The public holds great trust in him. His vision, discipline, spiritual grounding as a Hafiz-e-Quran, and strong decision-making make him a reliable national leader.
