BAJAUR: An Army constable was killed after unknown assailants opened fire in Tehsil Wara Mamund, Bajaur, local sources confirmed on Wednesday.
The incident took place near the Khoro Shah Cricket Ground when the soldier, identified as Constable Rahman Yousaf, son of Masood Jan, was allegedly targeted while on leave at his home. Security and local administration officials said the personnel had recently returned home from duty.
Emergency responders reached the scene and recovered the body.
Law enforcement cordoned off the area and launched a search and investigation to track down the attackers. Officials said evidence and witness statements are being collected, and forensic teams have been asked to assist the probe.
A local reporter says the extremist group Daesh (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the attack. If verified by security agencies, this would mark the third attack claimed by Daesh in the area within a week, raising concerns about a possible escalation of militant activity in the district.
Security sources said additional patrols and checkpoints have been deployed across Bajaur and neighboring areas to prevent any further incidents and to apprehend those responsible. Provincial and military authorities are expected to release formal statements as the investigation progresses.
No arrests have been announced so far till the filing of this report as local leaders and residents condemned the killing and urged swift action by the authorities to ensure the safety of civilians and security personnel.
